Volume 1 Chapter 28 The Possibilities of Earth Magic II
"Gardy, I'm gonna till the soil with [Earth magic], so just wait a bit."
When Gardy turned around, Cain was grinning.
"Gardy, how big do you want the new Satsuma field to be?"
To decide the magic's range, Cain checked.
"Hmm, this year we got lots of seed potatoes, so I'm thinking bigger than last year. About this much... right?"
Gardy said that while drawing lines with a hoe for a 6m by 12m space.
It's about the size of a badminton court.
"Okay! Step back a little, 'Earth Dig'."
Cain said "Earth Dig" 18 times.
The soil inside the lines flipped over one after another, turning into soft, fluffy farmland.
"Alright, done! How's that, Gardy?"
"[Magic] is amazing. Twelve days' work done in a blink!? This field looks like it's gonna spawn some great Satsumas."
Gardy touched the soft soil, sharing his thoughts.
"Well then, let's plant the seed potatoes right away?"
"Huh, you plant the seed potatoes just like that? Not after they grow sprouts?"
"No way you plant after sprouts. Satsumas get planted as potatoes..."
Gardy looked at Cain with a puzzled face.
"Hey, Gardy, can you spare me some seed potatoes? I wanna make my own Satsuma field and grow some too."
"Sure, I'll take care of things, so make it right next to this field."
"Thanks, Gardy."
'My tech teacher back in middle school told me if you don't plant from sprouts, you won't get many potatoes. I wonder how that teacher's doing...'
Cain remembered making a Satsuma field with his middle school tech teacher back then.
After that, Cain got seed potatoes from Gardy and made Satsuma sprouts.
What helped was the "Create Clay" [magic].
When making sprouts from seed potatoes, he needed a planter, but since the world had no such thing, he made one with "Create Clay.".
'"Create Clay" is pretty handy. Next time I'll try making dishes or something.'
The sprouts were growing well, so he decided to plant them in Cain's special field.
There were quite a few, so he asked Gardy for help.
Since he was only 6 years old, working in the field was pretty tough.
The small sprouts were coming up from the seed potatoes that Gardy had planted, but it looked like not all the potatoes were sprouting.
According to the teacher who taught him how to grow Satsumas, if you plant them from seed potatoes, the sprouting rate is low, and the harvest won't increase.
"Sir Cain, I just need to plant these sprouts, right?"
Gardy took the Satsuma sprouts from Cain and was about to plant them.
"Wait, Gardy. I'm gonna make the 'bed'."
Cain stood beside the field to create the 'bed'.
"What's a 'bed'?"
Gardy asked.
"Hmm, that's a little hard to explain, so I'll tell you after I make it."
After Cain tilled an area of 6m by 6m with "Earth Dig," he used "Hole" to create 5 'beds.'.
Five 'beds' stood at a height of 30 cm.
"These raised mounds of soil are called 'beds.' They improve drainage, and since they get more sunlight, the soil warms up, helping the crops grow better."
Cain explained using what he learned from his middle school teacher.
"That's amazing! Next time I plant crops, I'll try it out. But where did you get such knowledge, Sir Cain?"
"Um, well, uhh, the [Earth magic] skill told me about it."
"[Earth magic] skill is really great!"
Gardy was genuinely impressed.
'I'm sorry, Gardy.'
Cain felt crushed by a wave of regret.
