Volume 1 Chapter 32 It's Good That Namiki-San Is Getting Along With The People Who Like Bowling
Summary of the previous chapter: After cleaning the bakery really well, it was important to remember the menu.
Now, when Kashiyama-san is free, I need to learn about the different cakes and pastries in the shop, and also the menu for eating in.
When you want your bosses or colleagues to trust you in this workplace, the quickest way is to give your best and work hard, even if you make mistakes, especially with older or opposite-sex individuals.
If it's someone of the same gender and age, you shouldn't hold them back or take credit for their work, but it can be a bother to get good results.
"There are no unique cakes or pastries in this shop, so it's not too hard to memorize them. Anyway, let's be able to answer customer questions with a smile, like which cake has what flavor and what ingredients are used."
"Oh, okay."
"The main types are roll cake, shortcake, chiffon cake, chocolate cake, pistachio cake, cheesecake, rare cheesecake, mont blanc, mousse, fruit tart, pound cake, and more. And for baked goods, there are eclairs, cream puffs, macarons, financiers, savarins, cookies, sablés, donuts, and more. Also, there are puddings, crème brûlée, Bavarian cream, and others."
There are many different kinds... It's good that there are lots of cakes that aren't too special.
Well, it's still simpler than remembering the faces, names, and personalities of almost 50 girls working at adult entertainment store.
Even when suggesting girls to customers, it's pretty hard to pick ones who seem to have compatible personalities, no matter how they look.
Men usually care about looks, so even if the personalities don't match, they might still choose girls who look like what they want, pay 10,000 or 20,000 yen, and end up feeling disappointed afterward.
So, cakes and I get along just fine, plus they're only about 1000 yen for a whole cake.
Anyway, starting off, it's about getting the hang of the different cake types, getting used to handling questions from customers. Then, once that's down, it's onto restocking the showcase, packing and wrapping cakes for takeout orders, serving for eat-ins, and all that jazz.
Running a one-man show at a patisserie means I gotta be a jack-of-all-trades, so there's a lot to learn... but hey, no biggie.
After that, I took a breather around 2 PM, got an hour for grub and chill, then it's work till 7 PM, and that's a wrap for today.
Just as we were wrapping up, Ikurumi-san flashed a grin and said,
"Good work today. Are next week's Friday and Saturday good for you, like this week?"
"Yeah, I'm good."
"Alright, see you next week then."
"Yep, see you next week."
I said that, and Kashiyama-san chimed in too.
"Looking forward to next week."
"Yeah, hoping for a bit of an easier time next week."
And so, feeling exhausted, I finished my day, had dinner, took a bath, and organized my homework before going to bed.
The next day, it's the day to go out with me, Hirose-kun, Gouriki-kun, Saikachi-san, Shinonome-san, and Namiki-san.
We were supposed to meet at the station at 9:00, so I quickly showered, fixed my appearance as usual, and went to the station in the casual clothes Yayoi-chan had chosen for me.
I made sure to arrive 15 minutes early, but everyone except Shinonome-san was already there.
"Wow, everyone is here early."
I said, and Saikachi-san replied,
"Actually, this is my first time hanging out with friends like this."
Namiki-san added,
"I also have never done this before."
"Oh, really?"
It was a bit surprising, but I guess middle school students don't often go out with friends like this.
"Well, I suppose it's considered polite to come early in these situations, right?"
Hirose-kun said something with a smile.
"Yeah, you're right."
Gouriki-kun also agreed with Hirose-kun's words.
"Hmm, was 15 minutes ago too late?"
While we were discussing that, Shinonome-san arrived five minutes ago.
"Sorry~. The roads were crowded, and the bus didn't arrive on time."
"Oh, well, there's nothing we can do about it."
So, after Shinonome-san looked at my outfit from top to bottom, she said,
"Hata-pippi, the balance of your outfit is off."
"Huh?"
"Your clothes are fashionable, but the shoes don't match well. Shoes that don't go well with the clothes look bad, you know? If the clothes are light and subtle in color, black or brown shoes don't go well with them. The same applies to small accessories like bags, pouches, and belts, as they are all part of the overall style. Well, the fact that they are properly polished shows your personality, though."
"Oh, I made a mistake by not matching the shoes with the clothes."
"You know, Hata-pippi, I had this image that you are good at everything, so it's a bit surprising."
"Well, you see, Yayoi-chan helps me choose my clothes. I'm not good at fashion, you know?"
When I said that, Saikachi-san replied.
"Yayoi-chan? Who's that exactly?"
Namiki-san added.
"Is she, maybe, Hata-kun's friend?"
Why do they both look surprised?
"No, no, it's not like that. Yayoi-chan is my cousin, three years older, and she's a freshman in college this year. We used to live three stops away from each other, so when I was in elementary school, our parents would take us back and forth between our houses, and we played a lot. But we hardly saw each other in middle school. Then, when I started high school, I happened to get in touch with her, and when she said she'd help me choose my clothes, I asked her for the favor."
"I see."
"Is she your cousin's older sister?"
They both seem relieved, but their expressions are still a bit subtle.
"Well, anyway, let's start by taking the shuttle bus to Orlan."
So, we took the shuttle bus to Orlan and had a little discussion, and we decided that the first thing to do was go bowling.
By the way, Saikachi-san and Namiki-san haven't bowled much before, but Hirose-kun and Shinonome-san are quite good at it. So, Saikachi-san teamed up with Hirose-kun, and Namiki-san with Shinonome-san to learn as they played. Gouriki-kun and I were okay, so we formed a pair.
"Hey guys, let's just relax and not worry too much."
I said and everyone agreed, picking their shoes and choosing their bowling ball weight.
"Usually, women go for 10 or 11 pounds (≈4.5-4.9 kg), but that's too light for me. I'd prefer around 14 pounds."
When I mentioned that, Gouriki-kun asked,
"Can you throw something that heavy?"
"Well, they say the bowling ball weight should be about 1/10 of your body weight. 14 pounds is about 6.4 kilograms."
"Then... I might be around 11 pounds (about 5 kg)?"
"Gouriki-kun, you're slim, so that weight might work well for you."
I suggested, and so, we start playing bowling.
"Let's go!"
As the ball goes down the lane, it moves smoothly and suddenly, with a loud noise, all ten pins spread out in an instant.
Wow, this feels really refreshing!
"Wow, that's a strike!"
Gouriki-kun is so excited, as if he achieved something, and I give him a high-five.
"No, it was just luck."
Maybe bowling satisfies our natural desire to destroy things. Also, it's a game where anyone, regardless of age or gender, can enjoy it in the same place as long as they can handle the ball.
The indoor place is well air-conditioned, so even in this cold season, it's comfortable to play. It's nice to be able to enjoy it without worrying about the weather and without athleticism being a big factor.
Since we are using the lanes without gutters, the pins rarely stay standing.
Now, Gouriki-kun takes a turn...
"Oh, not a single pin fell."
"Maybe you can still aim for a spare?"
"Um, okay, I'll try my best."
"Good luck!"
I didn't even manage to hit any pins, but I guess that's normal for me.
After that, I didn't get any more strikes after that either.
While Gouriki-kun and I were having fun, it looks like Saikachi-san and Hirose-kun, as well as Namiki-san and Shinonome-san, have become friends and are having a good time bowling.
When you play bowling together, you share the fun, happiness, and frustration, and you can feel close to each other. Without realizing it, you become good friends.
It's great to see Namiki-san enjoying bowling with a smile.
