Chapter 29 Necromancer (Part One)

Chapter 29 Necromancer (Part One)

 "Shall we go outside then?"

I called out to everyone and pushed open the door that we had just entered from.

"Hey, you finally came out. I thought you were crushed to death in the basement because you were so slow."

Standing in the eerie twilight-like light of the underground dungeon was... a person with long hair alternating between black and white, with strange patterns or what could be considered as spell-like tattoos on their face.

They also had safety pins pierced into their cheeks and forehead, with numerous beads-like magic stones attached to them. They were wearing black pants on the lower body, but on the upper body, they were wearing a black British-style coat directly over their bare skin.

The exposed skin was adorned with numerous studs, chains, and sewn-in magic stones. The visible parts of their skin were also covered in tattoo-like spells. In their hand, they held a staff as tall as their own height, with a skull and bat wings at the top.

 "...Baron Belmrich."

I unintentionally murmured his name. Yes, he was the man who had killed me the most in the previous loops.

"Hmm, do you know my name? We should be meeting for the first time, right?"

Baron Belmrich looked puzzled, but quickly returned to his usual smirk.

Although, with his tattoo, it didn't make much of a difference whether he was laughing or not.

"So, you know about my job, too?"

"Yeah, the most feared necromancer in this world."

As I answered, he snorted proudly.

The man before me was a necromancer, someone who can manipulate the dead.

Whether it's an animal or a monster, as long as it's a deceased creature, he can control it freely.

Normally, a necromancer can control up to ten bodies at most, but it is said that this man can control an undead army the size of a battalion (around a thousand people) if they were human.

(In other words, this guy has the combat power of a whole battalion on his own. Well, at that point, it's practically military strength.)

 But I had my doubts.

(Why would such a big shot come out so early?)

Baron Belmrich wasn't supposed to show up until much later. At least, he had never shown up before the first event, where I meet the 'Witch of the Valley'.

"Well, well, you look surprised to see me here."

 Baron Belmrich spreads his arms.

"I have no idea why I was summoned to deal with a nobody like you."

"So, you didn't come here of your own free will, huh?"

"Yes, I'm just here to find cute undead materials. I'm trying to create an undead chimera by combining undead creatures."

An undead chimera... Is that guy really trying to create such a monster?

"After that, I received a message from the Witch Queen. She wants me to have a little fun with the eccentric youngsters in the secret passage of the underground dungeon."

 "The Witch Queen?"

I couldn't help but ask. The Witch Queen is a legendary figure who has built her empire somewhere far to the east. I don't know if she's a queen of witches or a female version of a demon king, but apparently, she's hostile to the other worlds I know.

The Witch Queen reigns over the underworld. Her powerful subordinates infiltrate each country, dragging people into the path of magic. One of them is this necromancer.

(But why would the all-powerful Witch Queen bother to know about us? That's never happened before...)

"Really, it's been a pain to search for someone so insignificant. Just a mere human without any magic, you can't be easily detected."

Baron Belmrich sighs as if it's a hassle. Indeed, searching for us mere humans is as difficult as finding a specific sheep in a flock. Did we get detected by coming here and having magic weapons?

"Well then, according to the Witch Queen's orders, shall we have a little fun?"

Baron Belmrich snaps his fingers in a pompous manner. Then, various grotesque beings rise from the surrounding marsh. Not just frog-men. There are those with tentacles like sea anemones on their heads, fish-like merfolk, and scavengers resembling a mix of rats and dogs often found in dungeons. All of them have a partially decaying appearance. Are they undead monsters?

"Everyone, form a circle with your back towards the door!"

 I shouted like that.

Everyone formed a semicircle in front of the door to the stone chamber.

"Morimura and Tsubasa, stand in the center of the circle! Ito-san, who can't fight, stand in front of the door at the far end!"

 Then Tsubasa immediately said,

"Why is that? Wouldn't it be better for me, who can use long-range weapons, to be at the front?"

"You two are our main force. We have to defeat the approaching undead with me, Shimura, Kondo, and Fukui. That's why we'll be at the front. I want the two of you to attack the undead from a higher position."

 "Understood!"

When Tsubasa picked up her bow, she said that the bow spoke to her. So she should already be able to use the Anti-evil Bow to some extent.

Beside her, Morimura held a staff. To increase its power, he transformed the staff into a larger size. As the undead slowly approached, Morimura prepared his staff. About 50 centimeters away from the staff, a fireball was generated and launched along with Morimura's determination.

 It was a fireball.

Normally, an incantation is required for casting a spell, but Morimura seems to be able to activate magic without incantation using the power of the staff.

Now, the fireball hit the undead and burned while engulfing the surrounding undead. Fire-based and holy magic are effective against the undead. Morimura continued to launch fireballs one after another. The eerie undead creatures were enveloped in flames one after another.

"Wow, we don't have a chance to shine."

Shimura said with a tone that went beyond admiration and sounded more like disbelief. Tsubasa also shot arrows one after another. The arrows stored together with the bow were not used. That's because those arrows have special powers. It would be a waste to use them against low-level undead.

Tsubasa probably understands that. She shoots the bow without using arrows. Then, invisible magical arrows pierce through the enemies. Tsubasa's anti-evil bow allows the wielder's magical power to be directly shot as arrows.

Occasionally, she picks up branches of grass and wood that have fallen at her feet and attaches them to the bow. In that case, the power is greater when the magi power is concentrated in the physical branch. Tsubasa had already made those knowledge her own and mastered their use.

(But Baron Belmrich's attack cannot end like this)
