Chapter 43 A Strange Turn of Events

Chapter 43 Monster Attack (Part One)

In the evening, we each headed to our respective positions.

Tsubasa went to the tower in the central square, Morimura to the central square, and I went to the square closest to the east gate.

(Where will the monsters attack from this time?)

The most likely possibility is the east gate. However, we cannot let our guard down at the north and south gates. We also need to be mindful of the separate unit that may attack from the southeast gate. I chose this square near the east gate as it is easily accessible from anywhere.

As I arrived at the square near the east gate, there were already over 20 adventurers gathered there. Everyone was armed with spears, axes, swords, lances, battle axes, warhammers, and other weapons.

(They've all brought weapons suitable for real combat.)

The first person to notice me as I entered the square was a big man who had confronted me at the guild's bar.

"You're here, kid! I won't go easy on you today!"

Almost everyone turned to look at me at the big man's words. It seemed that about one-third of them harbored hostility towards me, similar to the big man. The remaining two-thirds appeared to be more friendly. They were probably waiting for an opportunity to demonstrate their abilities. However, that doesn't necessarily mean they will come to my aid.

When I approached the big guy, his friends surrounded me.

"Well, you've come without running away. I'll give you credit for that."

"Don't think you can go back in one piece. Today, adventurers retire."

"You talked big. Whether you cry or scream now, it won't be forgiven."

Their openly hostile attitude momentarily irritated me.

(And I want to leave a mark on each of their faces right now.)

As I think about such things, I hold myself back because this is the mess I caused. Then a man who had separated from the group approached. Short-cut blond hair, a strong physique, and handsome. He was a young adventurer named Michael, who had tried to stop the big guy at the tavern.

"Wait, we didn't gather here to fight based on personal feelings, did we? We came to determine who has the strongest abilities."

Now the big guy is getting in Michael's face. He really is a simple-minded guy who easily lets his temper get the better of him.

"Michael, you still trying to stop us by taking this kid's side, huh?"

"Geese, I'm telling you to stop this personal quarrel!"

Slipping through the argument between the two, I climbed onto the flower bed in the center of the square.

 "Listen up, everyone!"

I called out at the top of my lungs.

"First, I want to apologize to everyone. I didn't gather everyone here to determine the strength of warriors!"

The gathered adventurers were momentarily stunned. But the next moment, half of them were furious.

"What are you saying now, at this point!"

"Are you getting cold feet, you brat!"

"You gathered everyone here, and now you think you can get away with this!"

"Who was boasting in the tavern the day before yesterday!"

As the adventurers grumbled, I shouted at them.

 "Listen to the whole story!"

For a moment, everyone's mouths shut. In that moment, I continued speaking.

"My sincere apologies for not seeking a comparison of strength among adventurers. However, as a result, the abilities of those gathered here will be tested. It's a matter of life and death!"

Michael, the handsome guy, stepped forward.

 "What does that mean?"

I thought he would calmly listen to my words. Adventurers cannot survive on strength alone. They need a mind to gather information, analyze it, and make judgments. He possesses that calmness.

"Soon, a horde of monsters will come pouring in from outside the town. I gathered everyone here to confront them."

 "A horde of monsters?"

 Michael looked puzzled.

"That's right. Some of them will break through the gates and enter the town. We must deal with them."

 "Don't say such nonsense!"

Geese, the big man, spat out.

"The outskirts of this town, you see, have mostly been cleared of dangerous monsters. Recently, even women and children can enter the surrounding forest."

 Furthermore, Michael continued.

"It's true what Geese says. Occasionally, there are some stray monsters, but it's mostly safe to say that there's not much danger. Even if monsters were to attack, this town has a new defense barrier in place. And that magic stone, it's none other than what you guys brought."

I nodded in agreement with those words.

"That's certainly true. But what if someone intentionally gathered monsters? And what if those monsters were led by someone and attacked this town? It wouldn't matter how many monsters were eliminated around this town."

Some of the adventurers began to look thoughtful at my words. I pointed out further cause for concern.

"And even with the defense barrier, the gate is still passable. If the gate is destroyed, even monsters could enter the town. While it may be impossible for large monsters, if humanoid-type monsters were to gather in groups and push through, they could invade the town, right?"

The adventurers began to stir. They were unsure whether to believe my words or not. However, Geese shouted even louder.

"You're talking nonsense! Are you afraid of the challenge now? And yet you're spouting such nonsense!"

 "Get closer, Geese."

After Michael defeated the big man, Geese, he looked up at me.

"If you're going to say that much, do you have any evidence? Can you say that monsters will attack us right away?"

I pointed my sword towards the town walls.

They can't see it, but there should be a defensive barrier there that keeps the monsters out.

"You'll soon find out if what I'm saying is true or not! There will be a large number of flying monsters appearing over there. They can't enter the town because of the barrier. But what will happen if the magic stones that create the barrier are destroyed? This town will be ravaged by the aerial monsters. And what if human-like monsters break through the gate and invade the town?"

The adventurers started to listen to my words.

 This is the final push.

"If the monsters don't appear within an hour after sunset, I will distribute all the reward money we obtained from the defensive barrier magic stones as an apology to everyone. And I will return my adventurer card and leave this town. How about that?"
