Chapter 44 Paradise

Chapter 44 Monster Attack (Part Two)

"If the monsters don't appear within an hour after sunset, I will distribute all the reward money we obtained from the defensive barrier magic stones as an apology to everyone. And I will return my adventurer card and leave this town. How about that?"

The adventurers started whispering to those nearby.

I feel confused about what to do, but it seems like things will go as planned.

They won't lose anything from this.

 Eventually, Michael spoke up.

"That's what he's saying. Let's wait a bit to see if the monsters appear. We were going to have a strength test here anyway. We'll stick around for an hour to see if they show up. It's okay if they don't. He's offering a reward if they don't show up."

It seems like the adventurers were convinced by his words.

No one opposed me after that.

At the end, the big man, Geese, just looked at me and said, "Next time, make sure you keep your promise."

We sat down in the square and waited quietly. Adventurers were talking everywhere, wondering if a horde of monsters would really come. However, because I said, "If they don't come, I'll pay a reward," they obediently waited for now.

When the sun disappeared in the western sky and a deep indigo color approached in the eastern sky...

 "They're here..."

Several dot-like objects appeared in the eastern sky. Whether they heard my voice or not, the surrounding adventurers stared at the eastern sky.

 "They're here?"

 "I can't see anything."

"No, something is flying in the eastern sky."

 "Isn't it a bird?"

"If it's that big, it's not a bird."

"It seems to be coming this way."

By that time, we could already make out the silhouette of a flying creature flapping its wings up and down.

 "Everyone, prepare for battle!"

I shouted loudly. The adventurers stood up and looked towards the eastern sky.

 "They're really here!"

 "It's a monster."

 "That... is it a Wyvern?"

 "No, it's a Gargoyle. It's tough."

"Seriously, a group of Gargoyles attacking the town... When was the last time this happened?"

I said to the restless adventurers.

"There's no need to panic. Flying monsters can't enter the town because of the defensive barrier. The problem is the humanoid-type monsters that try to break through the gate!"

"Do you know what kind of creatures are coming?"

 Michael asked me.

"Probably Lizardmen and Orcs. But there's a possibility that other monsters will attack as separate units."

"Which direction are they coming from? Are they attacking from the East gate?"

"That's the most likely scenario, but there's also a possibility they might attack from the North or South gate."

"What should we do? Should we split into groups?"

"No, dividing our numbers into two locations will be counterproductive. One of my comrades, an archer, is keeping watch from the tower. They will signal us with flaming arrows to indicate the direction the monsters are attacking from. When the arrows come, we'll all head in that direction. From here, we should be able to reach not only the East gate, but also the South and North gates quickly!"

Michael had an impressed look on his face.

"Did you think that far? Alright, I'll trust you!"

Geese snorted in dissatisfaction, but didn't say anything in particular. The gargoyle rushed towards the town. But when it reached the airspace above the castle walls, an electric-like light ran through the gargoyle.

 "Gwoh!"

The gargoyle screamed and started to reverse. The next gargoyle that flew in also ended up in the same state, unable to enter the town. The defense barrier was in effect. Then, above our heads, a beam of light flew towards us. It was a fire arrow shot by Tsubasa. The fire arrow flew towards the east gate.

"As expected, the monsters are attacking from the east gate! Spear users and polearm users, come to the front! Swordsmen, make sure to take down the monsters that come through the spears and polearms!"

After saying that, I turned to Geese, a big man.

"Take about five people with battle axes and war hammers and wait a little behind!"

Geese gave me a blatant look of dissatisfaction.

"Why! Why should I, the great me, hide behind other adventurers! I can't do something so embarrassing!"

"No, I want you guys to flank the enemy while the spear users hold off the monsters. It's going to be quite dangerous to attack the enemy with just a few people. I can only rely on someone like you who boasts about their strength!"

The big man Geese looked surprised but immediately said, "Got it. I'll do it!"

"Those guys with battle axes and war hammers, about five of you, come with me! The kid wants us to attack the enemy from the side!"

He called out to a sturdy-looking man. Then, I saw two gatekeepers running from the eastern gate.

"The monsters, a horde of monsters is attacking!"

"It's hopeless! The eastern gate is being breached!"

I grabbed the two of them and asked,

 "How many monsters are there?"

"I'm not sure, but I think there are about 40."

 (40... This number is delicate.)

In my past loops, there have been instances where around 50 monsters attacked.

(If there are actually over 40 monsters this time... maybe around 10 are acting as a separate unit, planning to invade the town from another location.)

Considering this, we should deal with the enemies in front of us first.

"Everyone, advance to the front of the East gate without breaking the formation! Don't let any monsters that enter from the gate escape!"

As per my instructions, the spearmen and pikemen took the front, followed by us swordsmen, and at the rear, the men led by the big guy Geese with battle axes and warhammers, moved towards the East gate.

I then instructed the two gatekeepers, "Inform the townspeople that monsters might break through the gate. Advise them not to leave their homes and to go to Martha's inn if there are any injuries. It should be safe there."

As we reached the front of the East gate, there was a loud noise, and the gate was periodically trying to open inward.

It seemed like the monsters from the outside were using logs and other items to collectively strike the gate.

With each added force from the outside, the gate bent inwards significantly.

The large crossbar placed on the gate already had visible cracks, seeming like it was about to break.

"Here they come! Everyone, prepare for battle!"

With my rallying cry, the spear wielders thrust their spears forward at the front line, while the swordsmen behind them poised their swords to defend the spear wielders if needed.

Before long, with a crackling sound, the latch broke and the gate burst open explosively.
