Chapter 45 Redefining Strength Without Good or Evil

Chapter 45 Monster Attack (Part Three)

"Here they come! Everyone, prepare for battle!"

With my shout, the spear users thrust their spears at the forefront, and behind them, the swordsmen stand ready to defend the spear users if needed.

Before long, with a creaking sound, the latch broke, and the gate burst open explosively. Outside stood a group of orcs. The orcs were armed with either a crescent blade or a spiked club.

With rough breaths, they let out a grunt and then, with a "Fugo, fugo," voice, they yelled "Char, ge!" and rushed forward in unison. With faces like wild boars, they charged in a group akin to a pack of wild boars.

At that moment, several arrows rained down. Besides Tsubasa, only a few archers could shoot at this distance. Although not many in number, the arrows pierced the bodies of the orcs engaged in battle. Just from the arrow attacks, the charging attackers couldn't help but falter.

As the orcs' charging force weakened, the archers who were prepared thrust their long spears to halt their advance. The orcs' weapons had short reach. With sharp spearheads pointed at them, the orcs' movements came to a halt.

 "Alright, swordsmen, charge forward!"

As soon as I shouted that, I leaped out ahead. The orcs' charging power was impressive, but once they stopped moving, each one wasn't as fearsome. I swiftly cut down two orcs with my crescent moon sword. Did they gain momentum because I defeated the orcs, or were they startled by the fact that I took down the orcs first?

 "We'll join the fight too!"

"Don't let the kids have all the fun!"

"We'll make the monsters regret attacking our town!"

The adventurer swordsmen began attacking the orcs one after another. It seems like we're off to a good start. The halted orcs are clearly shaken. However, the orcs are not foolish. They soon regrouped and reached a stalemate.

"Don't push yourself! If it gets tough, the swordsmen should back off! Leave it to the spear users!"

If the orcs gain momentum, we swordsmen will retreat for a moment. Then the spear users will provide cover from behind. With no worries about what's happening behind us, we swordsmen can fight to our heart's content. And there's one more plan.

 (Already?)

Just as I thought that, a sense of chaos came from the left. Geese and the others, the big men, as promised, flanked the orcs and attacked their sides. At first, the orcs didn't notice, but soon turned to the side, asking, "What's going on?" It was our chance. We surged in from the front.

The orc group was quickly put at a disadvantage by the surprise attack from the front with swords and spears, and from the side with battle axes. The orcs started to retreat. Anyone foolish enough to charge in with just momentum would become bait for a spear or sword, as the handsome guy, Michael, who had appeared at my side, told me.

"This battle is a total victory for us!"

But I couldn't agree wholeheartedly. The unease wouldn't leave me. My intuition was sounding the alarm, "Don't let your guard down!"

I knew the cause. First, the issue of numbers. In past loops, there should have been at least 50 monsters attacking. In contrast, this time, there were slightly fewer monsters. Are there truly only 40 in front of us?

In past loops, it had been a mixed force of orcs and lizardmen, but now there were only orcs in front of us. Did the lizardmen not participate this time? Or are they aiming to infiltrate the city as a separate unit?

(There's a possibility that a powerful orc has broken through the eastern gate, and agile lizardmen have infiltrated from another location.)

And then it happened. From the southeast direction, the sound of a sharp whistle could be heard. The sound of the whistle was regular. This is the signal I asked Kondo to sound if he finds enemies. And I told Michael,

"It seems like something unusual happened in the southeast. I'm heading there!"

 Michael looked at me.

"Are you sure you can handle it alone? Let me come with you!"

I looked at the surrounding situation. More than half of the orcs are already dead bodies. The current ones are not coordinated and are just swinging their weapons desperately at the gate. In that case, it should be fine for me and Michael to separate here.

"Understood. Leave this to the others, and let's go to the southeast gate!"

I said to the other adventurers around me.

"There might be monsters that have invaded the southeast. Michael and I will go there, so leave this to us."

"Alright, leave it to me! In this situation, we are enough to handle this on our own."

"If the southeast gate is in danger, go there immediately!"

Two older adventurers nearby respond to that.

 "Sorry, but please!"

Leaving those words behind, Michael and I head towards the southeast gate. The two of us run through the town side by side. The townspeople, upon hearing about the monster attack, have locked themselves in their houses. There are no signs of people in the town. This is very helpful for us.

When we get close to the southeast gate, we see a strangely forward-leaning figure with a flattened head at the street corner. No doubt, it's a lizard-type demihuman, a lizardman.

 "I knew it…"

I inadvertently let out such a voice.

 "Is that... a lizardman?"

 Michael asks.

"Yes, but I don't think it's just that one. There are probably a considerable number of them that have invaded. Be careful!"

The lizardman, noticing that we are approaching, hisses in intimidation. Nevertheless, as if it didn't matter, I swing my sword, and the lizardman's head falls.

I stepped out onto the street that continued from the southeast gate. As expected, there were more than ten lizardmen there.

 (There are more than usual.)

Thinking that, I turned my attention to the side entrance at the southeast gate. The gate had a small side entrance, just big enough for a small carriage to pass through. And in front of the side entrance, a bloodied gatekeeper lay fallen.

 "Michael! Hold them off here!"

In response to my words, Michael replied, "Got it!" As we approached the lizardmen, the group of lizardmen also approached us. Half of their weapons were spiked clubs, and the other half were half-moon swords like those of orcs. In the first exchange, I decapitated two lizardmen and severed the hand of one wielding a club. Michael had also defeated one.

Perhaps feeling that we were "formidable," the lizardmen suddenly changed direction. They gathered under the building and formed a circle. One-on-one, lizardmen weren't much of a threat to me, but as a group, they were quite troublesome. There was a possibility that the two of us would be surrounded instead. Both Michael and I were struggling to attack the lizardmen. Then, several of them behind the circle started climbing the walls of the building.

 "Uh-oh!"

If the Lizardmen manage to climb the building and invade the town, it will be a great chaos. There might be unexpected damages. However, it's also dangerous to blindly rush in.

 (What should I do...)

Just as I was thinking that, several arrows passed over my head. Those arrows pierced through the Lizardmen who had climbed the walls one by one. Almost at the same time, the square and the passage in front of the southeast gate, where the Lizardman and I were, were surrounded by a wall of flames.

"Akito-kun, the Lizardmen can't escape now! Go ahead and defeat them as much as you want!"

When I turned around at that voice, Morimura and Tsubasa were there. Tsubasa also shouted while holding her bow.

"If, by any chance, any Lizardmen manage to escape, I'll take them down with my bow!"

"Thank you, I appreciate it! Michael, let's exterminate the Lizardmen here!"

 "Got it!"

Michael and I attacked the remaining lizardmen side by side. We covered each other's backs as we fought. This way, we wouldn't be taken by surprise. The lizardmen couldn't escape as they were surrounded by Morimura's magic, the Firewall. Speaking of which, when did Morimura learn to cast a Firewall?

Furthermore, Tsubasa was with us. While releasing distracting arrows, Tsubasa skillfully took down any lizardmen attempting to escape while I wasn't looking. We defeated all the lizardmen in no time.

"We're done here. How about the other areas?"

I was concerned about the East Gate. Tsubasa answered that.

"It's fine. From what I saw just before I came here, most of the orcs had been defeated. By now, they should have everything under control over there."

 "Is that so, good."

I breathed a sigh of relief,

(This time, the attack of the monsters was different from before, but it was quite easy to defeat them.)

and I thought like that. Michael, with a smile, said,

"This is all thanks to everyone, including you. Now, let's go join the East Gate folks and have a celebratory drink!"

 as he patted my shoulder.
