Chapter 5 In the Forest (Part Two)

Chapter 5 In The Forest (Part Two)

The six of us proceeded through the open area filled with fallen trees. There were countless fallen trees, making it difficult to move straight ahead, and our feet were constantly being tripped by the fallen trees, hindering our progress.

I, Morimura, and Shimura helped the three girls who were with us and moved forward.

"There are so many fallen trees here. It's just wasting time and we can't move forward easily."

Shimura complained while pulling Kojima Harumi's hand and lifting her onto the fallen trees.

"That's true. Why are we in a place like this... Ahh!"

It seems like she slipped and let out a high-pitched scream.

 "Please don't scream so loudly."

I frowned and warned her. But it seemed like she was dissatisfied with that.

"It can't be helped! I'm being forced to walk in a place like this!"

Ignoring her complaints, I looked up at the sky.

(The flying creatures have keen eyes and ears.)

Since entering this fallen tree area, I have been mainly paying attention to the sky.

"What's with you, acting all introverted..."

 I hear Kojima Harumi's whisper.

 (Once again, "acting all introverted"...)

While thinking that, I ignore it. In any case, I have to help as many classmates as possible. For that reason, I want to quickly join up with the others...

"But these fallen trees, sometimes there are traces of burning. It also makes it slippery... I wonder what happened?"

Morimura points to the burned part of the fallen tree and says so.

(So he noticed... Morimura is really sharp)

And if the one who caused this burning appears... we're done for here. Was that the flag that signaled it? But in the gray, cloudy sky, I see several black dots. The black dots repeat irregular movements and gradually grow larger.

 "No way! Everyone, hide!"

I grabbed Morimura's arm and we hid behind a fallen tree. The other four also each found cover behind the large fallen trees nearby. I'm grateful that everyone is following my instructions. But the fallen tree isn't big enough to hide our entire bodies. We have to crouch down and make sure not to attract attention.

 "W-What's happening? What happened?"

Shimura asked in a trembling voice.

He was holding Kojima Harumi next to him.

A little further away, Nemoto Reiko and Nomura Mika were huddled together, trembling.

"I saw something in the sky. It's coming this way."

I answered in a barely audible voice. Morimura next to me looked at me.

"What do you mean by 'something'? A monster in the sky?"

I nodded silently. In my heart, I prayed, "Please don't let it be a dragon..."

The one who created this fallen tree area was undoubtedly a dragon. One of the strongest monsters in the other world. The black scorch marks on many fallen trees are evidence of that. It is likely that the reason there are so many fallen trees in such a wide area is the aftermath of a battle between two dragons.

Now, a shrill, jarring cry can be heard from the sky. It came from a monster that has an oddly unstable, ungainly way of flying up and down.

 "W-what is that?"

Kojima Harumi inadvertently let out such a voice. I was nervous and relieved at the same time. This is not a dragon. It's a smaller, diminutive monster, a wyvern.

Wyverns are less than 2 meters in length, with bat-like wings and two raptor-like legs. Their heads resemble dragons, but they have no horns and do not breathe fire. They are not such formidable opponents.

The issue is whether they belong to a species with poison, but regardless, if bitten, it's dangerous, so I'm not thinking about that right now.

After that, I made Morimura bow his head. It was to prevent him from looking up. Animals that rely on their eyesight recognize their opponents based on whether they have "two eyes" or not. By hiding our faces or not, the possibility of being discovered by the enemy decreases significantly. Of course, not looking at the opponent who is about to attack comes with a considerable sense of fear. But I have no choice but to suppress that fear.

However, when I glanced sideways, I realized my mistake. Nemoto Reiko and Nomura Mika, who were a little distance away, were looking up at the sky as if they were stunned. A wyvern flew past their heads.

 ""Ahh!""

The two of them screamed. It's bad, the wyvern just assessed the situation. Whether the opponent they are about to attack is weaker than themselves. Probably, after seeing the intimidation just now and thinking "the opponent is weak," the wyvern will proceed with a full-fledged attack.

"Morimura, hide under this fallen tree! You won't be attacked by the wyvern if you stay under here!"

I pointed to the small gap between the fallen tree and the ground.

 "What about Akito?"

 "I will save them!"

I said, taking the goblin spear and running towards Nemoto Reiko and Nomura Mika. As I expected, a wyvern swooped down towards them. I thrust the spear towards the wyvern. The wyvern hastily tried to brake, but the spear tip pierced its swollen belly.

 "Gaaaaaa!"

The wyvern and its high-pitched scream soared back into the sky. I inflicted some injuries, but they were probably shallow. It wouldn't die from that. But it should have understood that we also have the power to attack.

 "Ah, ah, ah..."

Both of them let out voiceless voices while trembling in fear.

"Both of you, anyway, hide under the fallen tree. Dig into the ground if you have to and hide!"

Two people nodded their heads in agreement, but their bodies did not move immediately. Still, they forced their hands to move and began digging under the fallen tree. Meanwhile, I held my spear and looked up at the sky. There were four wyverns. Occasionally, they would swoop down and try to tear me apart with their sharp talons. But every time, I thrust my spear forward, not allowing the wyverns to get closer.

Then, it was during such a back-and-forth battle.

 "Kyaa!"

Suddenly, a scream came from a different direction. It was from Shimura and Kojima Harumi. When I looked, I saw one wyvern grabbing Kojima Harumi's left shoulder and left arm, trying to lift her up into the air. At the same time, Shimura was grabbing her right leg, trying to pull her back.

 "Kojima-san!"

As I immediately tried to move towards the two of them, another wyvern attacked from behind. I instinctively rotated forward and avoided the wyvern's claws. As the wyvern flew over my head, it grabbed Kojima Harumi's right arm. There was no way Shimura could withstand the flying power of two wyverns alone.

 "Aaaah!"

With Shimura's small scream, Kojima Harumi was quickly taken high above.

 "Help!"

 Her scream echoed.

 "Damn it!"

I grabbed the stone axe from the goblin. But it was no longer at a height to throw and reach. A third wyvern flew in and bit her left leg.

 "Aaaaah!"

 Crackle, snap, snap, crackle, crackle

With ear-covering sounds, Kojima Harumi's body was torn apart by the three wyverns. Blood spilled from her body like a bucket, mixed with her entrails. The fourth wyvern quickly caught it in the air.

Shimura, Nemoto Reiko, Nomura Mika, and Morimura under the fallen tree, watched in astonishment. I alone prepared for the next attack, holding my spear.

However, there was no further attack from the wyverns. Perhaps satisfied with devouring Kojima Harumi, the four of them flew away in the direction they came from. The only thing left behind was a large amount of bloodstains clinging to the fallen tree. A frozen silence filled the air.

 "What the hell, why?!"

Soon, Shimura muttered in a vacant tone. No one answered. No, they couldn't answer.

"Why does Harumi have to die in a place like this?!"

 Finally, Shimura screamed.

"Don't raise your voice. Do you want to attract other monsters?"

At my calm voice, Shimura startled. But his anger towards the injustice inside him wouldn't subside.

"Then tell me. Why do we have to go through something like this?"

Without answering, I offered my hand to Morimura, who was trying to emerge from under the fallen tree.

"Akito, do you know something? If so, tell us!"

Shimura's voice grew louder once again.

"I don't know as much as you think. There's no way I would know why we're experiencing these things."

Then, approaching Nemoto Reiko and Nomura Mika, I asked, "Are you okay? Can you walk?"

They trembled in fear but nodded silently, supporting each other as they stood up.

After waiting for that, I spoke quietly.

"What I understand now is that if we linger here, there's a high chance we'll be attacked by the next monster. The smell of blood is spreading. We have to leave this place immediately."

Using the spear as a cane, I turned my back to them and started walking.
