Chapter 6 Dusk on the Old Battlefield (Part One)

Chapter 6 Dusk On The Old Battlefield (Part One)

As we walked over the top of the hill and continued a bit further, the number of trees gradually decreased. The sun was getting ready to set, and we finally left the forest and entered an open area. The grassland had scattered trees and small rocky mountains.

 "Should we come out here?"

I couldn't help but whisper those words. Morimura gave me a suspicious look.

"Akito-kun, do you know this place?"

Instead of answering that question, I said something else.

"The sun will set soon. Let's find a place to sleep before that."

 "Where should we sleep?"

I pointed towards a small rocky mountain.

"Let's go over there. It would be better to sleep on a rocky mountain like that rather than in this open area. It would be even better if we could find a private house along the way."

I pointed to a rocky mountain about two kilometers away. It was about 50 meters high. Shimura, Nemoto Reiko, and Nomura Mika, who were following behind me, seemed a bit annoyed, but they still followed me silently. As I walked towards the rocky mountain, I kept my eyes on the ground, searching for something useful. But Morimura was the first one to find it.

 "What is this, I wonder?"

Morimura held in his hand was a spear or an arrowhead. It's hard to tell at first glance because it's rusty.

"I think it's probably a spear. The wooden part might have rotted away."

Then it seems Shimura found something, too.

"There's something here, too. Is this a broken sword or something?"

What he had in his hand was indeed the tip of a sword.

"Why would something like this be lying around?"

To the curious Morimura, I replied.

"Probably, I think there was a war here before."

 "A war?"

"Yeah, I don't know how long ago... but judging by the rust, it might not have been that long ago."

 Nomura Mika said, sounding scared.

"A war like that... isn't it dangerous to be here?"

I hesitated on how to answer, but in the end, I decided to say it. After all, we'll know in a few hours anyway.

"I don't think it's dangerous in the sense that Nomura-san says. There hasn't been a war going on these days."

 Morimura interjected.

"What do you mean by that? Does it mean it's dangerous in a different way?"

"If this is a battlefield, there should be corpses lying around. I think the spirits of the soldiers are wandering too."

 Morimura's expression changed.

"Could it be... that ghosts and such appear?"

"It's not just ghosts. There's also the possibility of corpses coming back to life, you know."

Nemoto Reiko and Nomura Mika held their breaths.

 Shimura muttered,

 "That's ridiculous."

 I gently advised against it.

"This is a world where goblins and wyverns roam. It's not strange to have ghosts and undead, right?"

I understand the desire to deny it, but it's important for them to recognize that this is the kind of world it is.

"So, so then, what should we do?"

Morimura's voice was filled with fear.

"So let's go to that rocky mountain. Let's find a place to hide there. It's too exposed here. If we get surrounded by the undead, we won't stand a chance."

Then, the girls who were dragging their feet in exhaustion suddenly started moving forward, as if in a race. I didn't threaten them, but it seemed to have worked like medicine.

Before the sun set, we arrived at the rocky mountain we were aiming for. There was an old church-like building about halfway up the mountain. It was a small church with three floors.

"This is perfect. Let's stay here tonight."

However, the four of them hesitated.

"Is this really a church? I wonder if there are any curses or demons lurking here."

"I think it should be fine. Besides, it's better than being outside. If we stay outside, the undead will come pouring out from everywhere."

Still, everyone had a puzzled look on their faces.

"Which is better, facing dozens of undead outside or fighting a single monster inside the church?"

I said it half-jokingly, but it seemed like everyone didn't take it that way. They exchanged anxious glances. I quickly corrected myself.

"Just kidding. I don't feel any danger in this church. And since the walls seem to be made of stone, we can barricade ourselves and be safe even if monsters come rushing in."

"Got it. If Akito-kun says so."

When Morimura said that, the other three reluctantly agreed.

"Then let's start by investigating the inside."

I said that and drew the sword I picked up along the way. Morimura and Shimura also held their swords in the same way. Nemoto Reiko and Nomura Mika had daggers in their hands. It's a dull blade since it's a sword I picked up, but it's better than being unarmed.

I pushed open the heavy wooden door. Inside, it seemed to be indeed a church. There was something like an altar in front.

Unlike the churches I know, there were no worshiper's chairs or anything other than the altar.

There was a staircase on the right end. We searched the first floor thoroughly, but there was really nothing. We quickly went upstairs. But it was the same there. Other than the altar, there were only two old cupboards and some pieces of wood.

Those cupboards were also falling apart and already on the verge of breaking. There was nothing inside. Furthermore, this church's roof was also partially destroyed. From there, we could see the evening sky. Perhaps the pieces of wood used to be part of the roof.

"Here, it seems like it wasn't used as a church."

Morimura said as he walked around the altar.

"Yeah, maybe it was used as a command post for important people during the war. That's why the roof was probably removed."

 "I don't care about that."

Shimura said disinterestedly and lightly kicked the wood.

"If there's a big hole in the roof, it's no different from being outside. Let's go back to the first floor. At least there's a ceiling there."

 But I disagreed.

"No, it's better to sleep here."

"Why? It might start raining, and it's pretty cold in here."

"If the door on the first floor is destroyed, the undead will come in right away. In that respect, we'll be fine as long as we can defend the narrow staircase on the second floor."

"But there are monsters that fly in the sky, like the wyvern we saw earlier, right? What if they come in through the roof hole?"

"They can't come in through that roof hole right away. Besides, monsters that fly in the sky don't want to enter closed spaces from the beginning. They lose their greatest weapon, which is freedom of movement in space."

"You really know a lot, don't you?"

But I will ignore that question again.

"Besides, if we keep watch here, we might be able to find the others from different classes. That's why the second floor is better."

This is my true feelings. Although the classmates scattered, everyone took refuge in the forest on the left side of the meadow. If we advance from there, they should come out to this battlefield remains.

(I wonder how accurate my prediction will be...)

I had my doubts, but there was no use thinking about it.

 "But, it's cold here."

Nemoto Reiko said in a small voice.

"Yeah, let's start a fire. Everyone, gather wood here."

I pointed right below the hole in the roof. It was to prevent the smoke from accumulating inside.

"But how do we start a fire? Should we use a flint and steel method here?"

Morimura asked, so I took out a lighter used for starting fires from my backpack.

"Hey, why do you have that?"

Morimura widened his eyes and responded with a smile.

"I go solo camping sometimes. The matches had been left inside from the last time."

That's not the truth, though. I noticed in the classroom, and immediately went to the school store to buy water and bread, and at the same time, I swiped a lighter and matches from the chemistry lab.

In addition to the wooden floor, I also prepared the already half-broken cupboard for the bonfire. The wood was dry, so the fire caught on quickly. Everyone sat around the fire.

(I hope everyone in the class will gather here after finding this fire.)
