Side Story - Side Fencer Ii, Part Two

Side Story - Side Fencer Ii, Part Two

I was really impressed for a while, but then something started bothering me.

No matter how promising Yukina-sama is, it's hard to believe that he could learn magic on his own in such a short period of time. As I can tell from his use of the spear, Yukina-sama is like me, a frontline warrior type who wields weapons. He shouldn't have any foundation when it comes to handling magic.

"Yukina-sama, where did you learn healing magic?"

"Hmm? Oh, I asked Kyunei. Since there's a professional by my side, I thought I'd give it a try and learn from her."

While speaking, Yukina-sama glanced briefly at his spear.

"You know, during the promotion test, there was a mercenary I accidentally helped. After seeing that, I thought it would be good to at least know some first aid for when I'm out on a job."

 "I see... You're right."

Yukina-sama's thoughts made sense. But it took me a moment to nod in agreement. Even though I understood it in my head, my heart hesitated a little.

I know the reason. It's because Kyunei-sensei's name came out of Yukina-sama's mouth.

I already knew that Yukina-sama and Kyunei-sensei were in a romantic relationship.

It's not like Yukina-sama openly declared it.

But even though I've spent my whole life focused solely on martial arts, when I saw their interactions during the promotion exam, I didn't intend to be oblivious to the subtleties of human emotions.

It wasn't even necessary to ask who Yukina-sama learned healing magic from. It was only natural that Kyunei-sensei's name would come up. And yet, a throbbing pain accompanied by discomfort and unease arises deep in my chest.

As if shaking it off, I shook my head.

It's only natural for a servant to wish for the happiness of their lord. The happiness of the lord is the happiness of the servant. Therefore, it's inappropriate for a servant to have forbidden feelings for the lord's beloved.

I spoke to disguise the emotions bubbling up inside me.

"...I acknowledge Kyunei-sensei's skills. Even with an excellent instructor, it's truly impressive that Yukina-sama has learned healing magic in such a short time."

"I can only do so much for minor cuts. It's impossible to heal during battle, it's just a temporary relief. Please don't praise it so much── huh?"

Suddenly, Yukina-sama glanced back at his spear. Without a word, he gazed at the spear, then shrugged his shoulders and sheathed it on his back with a small sigh.

"Well, let's wrap up the chat and get to work soon. We're not meeting the specified numbers yet."

Yukina-sama said while pulling out a big knife to dismember the monster.

By the way, Yukina-sama often looks at that black spear. Strangely enough, Yukina-sama's expression changes constantly at that moment. It's a bit different from just being careful with his favorite weapon.

It's as if there is someone else there, having a conversation.

"What's wrong, Mikage? You're spacing out."

Yukina-sama called out to me, startling me.

"I'm sorry again. I'll get started right away."

Today, I'm too distracted by unnecessary things. That's why I ended up injuring myself earlier. It's a clear sign of my inexperience.

"If you're not feeling well, let me know. It's not like we have to finish this job by the end of today."

 "No, it's not a problem."

While I appreciate Yukina-sama's concern, I feel ashamed for making him worry. I focused on my work, trying to push away any distractions.

After that, I was able to complete the request without any problems, but personally, it was the worst outcome for me. The reason is that I got hurt multiple times in the battle with the monster that followed.

It was just a scratch, but it's a mistake that I would never make against an opponent of this level. And I have an idea of the cause.

I was thinking about Yukina-sama and Kyunei-sensei. I just couldn't get that out of my head, and it made my swordsmanship dull.

Getting distracted by unnecessary thoughts and getting injured is something that should never happen to a martial artist.

"Well, this is Mikage's share. Sorry, it might be just a small amount for a 2nd rank mercenary."

"For me, it wouldn't be a problem if Yukina-sama received the full amount."

"Don't be stupid. That wouldn't be fair at all. You need to receive my fair share, or else I'll be in trouble."

I received half of the reward from the guild, which I got from Yukina-sama. Considering today's blunder, I hesitated to accept it.

It was me who unintentionally blurted it out.

"Well, if that's the case, I'm the one who got injured more than double, so I should be the one paying a fine, you know?"

 "Uh..."

 I couldn't respond to Yukina-sama's mean-spirited words.

On the surface, he was unharmed, but Yukina-sama had been injured several times during the monster extermination this time, although not severely. Each time, he healed himself with healing magic.

 "...Thank you very much."

"Fine, as long as you understand. Good job today... It's strange for someone with more injuries to act all high and mighty, isn't it?"

Yukina-sama comforted me with a smile, but I couldn't shake off my unease.
