Volume 4 Chapter 9 I Gave It A Try, But...
Unfortunately, I couldn't picture Mikage working on tasks like rebuilding the house or clearing debris at all. In my mind, Mikage always seemed more suited for fighting.
As I pondered with my arms crossed, Mikage hesitantly spoke up.
"...It's really embarrassing to say, but..."
"Is there still something else?"
"W-well, the truth is, I've never done this kind of work before."
"...? But haven't we all been there?"
Until reaching the 4th rank, I had only been hunting Big Rats tirelessly. This is the first time I've taken on such miscellaneous tasks.
"No, not like that... I mean, truly, it's my first time."
"...In your whole life?"
Looking incredibly embarrassed, Mikage nodded.
"At home, I've been learning swordsmanship since I was young, but I haven't been interested in anything else much. Even after leaving home, I earned money by defeating monsters and escorting merchants, so I hardly have any experience in jobs other than wielding a sword."
I was about to blurt out, "Then why did you come with me on this mission?" But I swallowed it down. I almost felt like delivering the final blow to Mikage, who seemed down.
Listening to the current situation, I'm starting to wonder what job I should introduce to Mikage. Initially, I thought that if I forcefully included her in the work and showed her progress, she would naturally fit in, but that seems difficult now.
No, wait. It's too early to give up.
If things continue like this, Mikage will end up being just a clumsy girl with only sword skills, beauty, fox ears, and... uh, breasts. Since she looks up to me as her lord, I want to avoid that.

Scratching my head, I tried to think hard.
"So, this village got attacked by monsters (goblins), right? Even though the monsters were cleared out, it's still not totally safe."
"Yeah, you're right about that."
Thanks to mercenaries who came to this village instead of us, the nearby goblins were wiped out.
And in the cave where the goblins seemed to be coming from, there were magic circles just like the ones used in the royal capital. That's why the number of goblins increased so quickly in a short time, turning the cave into a 'nest'.
This village is located near the royal capital, just on the opposite side from where the large-scale magic circles were set up. Probably, the plan was to attack from both sides with monsters, possibly intending to encounter demon (mazoku) raids.
Already, the magic circles have been destroyed by hired mercenaries, and the threat has been eliminated. However, there might still be goblins summoned who have escaped human eyes.
"So, I think it would be good to patrol around the village so that those working here can focus on their tasks without worry."
I said, while moving my mouth as I thought. I was a bit unsure towards the end.
But Mikage's face brightened up when she heard my words.
"As expected of Yukina-sama! If it's that job, then I am the perfect fit――no, rather, there is no one else in this village who can fulfill that role better than me!"
Before, her tail was drooping weakly, but now it's wagging energetically like nothing happened. It's so sudden that it catches me off guard.
"Alright, let's see this Mikage shine in this important role! Well then, here I go!"
With a sharp nod, Mikage dashes away from me with her strong legs in no time.
"...Important role?"
The recent goblin attack was unusual, but there aren't many fierce monsters around this village normally.
Plus, while goblins can be troublesome when they come in large numbers, they're pretty weak individually. And with the mercenaries who were here to clean them up, it's unlikely they missed such a large group.
Even if a couple of them escaped, it's nothing the villagers couldn't handle.
"Well, but who knows if only goblins were summoned. It might not be a waste to be prepared."
During the goblin attack, there was a 'Troll' leading the group. Even if there was another one, it's hard to believe the mercenaries would miss it. But, you never know.
People often think I'm reckless, but I'm actually pretty cautious. As they say, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." I like to handle problems before they become big issues.
Most of all, there's Mikage's enthusiasm. It's hard to stop her now, especially since there's nothing left of her in this place to stop.
"Well, I guess I should get back to work."
I took a bit too long of a break.
I returned to work, helping transport wood.
