Volume 1 Chapter 4 To Become Stronger

Volume 1 Chapter 4 To Become Stronger

Back in town, I entered the Adventurer's Guild building again.

This time, I came to sell the materials from the Killing Bear I defeated earlier.

Even though I've gained a new ability with the Instant Death Magic spell, I'm still far from the strength of S-Rank adventurers like Allen and Balzark.

To become even stronger from here, I need to defeat more monsters and level up my skills.

Even if I go to other places, I still feel uneasy with my current abilities.

So, where are there many monsters?

 That would be the dungeon.

Near this town called Voltana, there are several dungeons where many monsters reside.

It would be the quickest way to go around them and defeat the monsters.

"But to delve into the dungeon, I need to be prepared, and that takes some money.

Now, I head straight to the counter.

"I want to sell some materials."

"Huh? Weren't you the one from earlier...?"

As I talk to the receptionist, I use the ability I obtained earlier, the 'Coffin of the Dead,' to make a Killing Bear appear on the guild floor.

 "─Huh?"

At that moment, the receptionist's face showed a look of astonishment.

She seemed unable to understand what had happened.

"W-what was that just now!? And this is... a Killing Bear!? Why would you have such a monster!"

"I defeated it. It seems like the Instant Death Magic spell happened to work."

As I spoke, the adventurers in the guild began to stir.

'Hey, isn't he that infamous weakest human? But he took down a Killing Bear...'

'A-and didn't the monster's body suddenly appear on the floor?'

'Did he really defeat a B-rank monster at level 1? This has to be a joke, right?'

"So, it would be helpful if I could get it sold for now."

Encouraging the bewildered receptionist to do her job, I continued.

"Alright, everyone! We've got some B-Rank materials, so lend a hand!"

The receptionist regained her composure and called out, prompting the other staff members to move the Killing Bears further inside.

After waiting for a while, a male staff member returned from the back.

He spoke to the receptionist, then handed her a heavy leather bag.

The receptionist slowly handed me the bag.

"Here is the payment for the sold materials, consisting of a hundred gold coins. Since most of the materials were in good condition, we have added an extra amount based on the guild's appraisal standards."

 "Thank you."

I took hold of the offered leather bag and quickly left the guild.

The payment for the materials was a hundred gold coins.

With such a substantial amount of money, I wouldn't have to worry about food for a while.

(But maybe it's best to refrain from using the adventurer's guild in the future...)

Because I'm recognized as a Level Cap 1 trash by the guild, that's why.

I wonder what they would think if someone like me brought in monster materials that don't match my strength.

It's obvious that something is wrong and they will suspect me.

Also, adventurers usually form parties to act together, but I can't join other adventurers.

I can't imagine anyone wanting to form a party with me, a Level Cap 1, but more importantly, I don't think it's a good idea for others to know about my Instant Death Magic spell.

(For now, let's prepare to enter the dungeon.)

Having earned enough money, I decided to move on to the next action right away.

Along the main street of the town outside the guild, various shops are lined up.

In Voltana, where many adventurers gather, there are naturally many shops doing business with them.

I go to the tool shop to gather the necessary tools.

Some potions for use in emergencies.

 Torches to illuminate the darkness.

 Water and portable food.

 And a map.

I'll only bring enough water and food for one day for now.

Because today is just a warm-up.

If I buy too many things, my luggage will become bulky, and with my current status, armor is too heavy.

The ability of the "Coffin of the Dead" is just to store the targets defeated with Instant Death Magic.

So normal items need to be carried by hand.

However, there is a possibility that I might be able to "mislead" it. I will try it after entering the dungeon.

The entrance to the dungeon is near this town.

The closest location is in the forest, about an hour's walk east from Voltana.

I spread out the map and headed there.

As I left the town and walked for a while, the atmosphere suddenly changed to a gloomy and oppressive one.

 (...So this is the entrance)

In front of me, there was a massive cave that extended underground.

It was the entrance to the dungeon.

According to what I've heard, the dungeon is divided into different areas called floors, and each floor has a dramatically different landscape.

It is said that as you go deeper into the lower floors, the monsters become stronger and more dangerous, but at the same time, valuable treasures are said to be sleeping there.

That's why many adventurers challenge dungeons like this and gain wealth and fame by defeating monsters and obtaining materials and treasures.

However, for me, those things have no meaning.

My goal is to defeat the monsters lurking in this dungeon and become stronger.

As I stepped into the cave, a dry wind blew from somewhere.

In the area called the "upper layer," which is closest to the surface within the dungeon, it seems that not many ferocious demons appear.

It's the perfect place to test out my newly developed Instant Death Magic.

I proceed deeper into the dim dungeon.

 'Kii! Kikiikii!!'

Then, I heard something like a cry from the darkness ahead.

Emerging from the darkness was a goblin, with green skin and a small stature.

There were about ten of them.

Each of them holding worn-out swords and shields.

Goblins, like slimes, are monsters of E-Rank equivalent. However, they are formidable opponents as they act in groups and possess the intelligence to wield weapons.

Goblins inhabit forests and dungeons like this one, attacking the people living in the surrounding areas.

To them, I must appear as an easy target, walking alone in the dungeon.

Goblins raise their swords and daggers, without hesitation, intending to take my life.

 But that's just fine.

That's exactly why I can fight without hesitation.

 "(Death)"

As I close in on the Goblins, I unleash "Death" while being aware of the effective range of Instant Death Magic.

 'Kiiiiii!!'

The released jet-black wave hits the leading goblin.

It gives out the same death cry as the Killing Bear before falling and lying motionless.

 'Kikiki!?

The remaining goblins, perhaps feeling fear at their comrade's sudden fall, momentarily stop in their tracks.

 Then, they surround me.

 "(Death)"

Without a moment's pause, I unleash the next Instant Death Magic.

 'Kyaiii!!'

The second goblin falls on the spot, unable to do anything.

 'Kii!'

The goblin right behind me swings a sword, but I easily dodge it.

With each goblin I defeat, I feel lighter and my strength surges.

I grab the goblin's face and activate the magic.

 "(Death)"

With my original magical power, the "third hit" activated, which I shouldn't have been able to do.

 As expected.

 'Kiki…'

Like a thread being cut, the third goblin collapsed to the ground.

 "(Death), (Death), (Death), (Death)"

While avoiding attacks, I cast magic repeatedly.

 "(Death), (Death), (Death)"

Before I knew it, all the goblins around me had fallen to the ground and become silent.

"As expected, my skill level didn't go up."

Perhaps because defeating the Killing Bear caused my skill level to rise rapidly, it seems that goblins don't provide enough experience points.

 However, there was a harvest.

 "Status"

As I spoke, a translucent board appeared.

 ======================================

 [Basic Status]

 Name: Ark

 Occupation: Magician

 Level: 1

 HP: 215/215

 MP: 10/60

 Attack: 42

 Defense: 54

 - Instant Death Magic Lv20

 [Owned Abilities]

 - Half Magic Consumption Reduction Lv1

 - Range Increase Lv1

 - Success Rate Increase Lv2

 - Coffin of the Dead

 - Soul Retrieval

 ======================================

Defeating the goblins triggered the ability 'Soul Retrieval', which resulted in an increase in status.

As a result, it became possible to immediately activate ten rounds of (Death).

The effect of the Increased Success Rate seems significant, and there is currently no sense of failure.

In case of emergency, I plan to drink a potion to restore magic power, but at this rate, it should be possible to proceed while recovering magic power.

Using the ability Coffin of the Dead, I retrieve the goblins.

When I wave my hand, the equipment they had also disappeared. It seems that equipment is recognized as part of the body.

So, I began walking once again towards the depths of the dungeon.
