Volume 1 Chapter 41 Temporary Peace
After reserving three rooms at the inn, we made our way to a tavern on the main street of Trasverum for lunch.
For the past few days of traveling through the forest, we had only been eating portable food, which consisted of soup made by dissolving powdered spices in hot water and hard biscuits.
I asked if they wanted a proper meal, and both of them nodded silently.
"Welcome!"
The waitress noticed us entering the shop and greeted us with a smile, then led us to a table.
As I looked around the shop, I noticed that Trasverum, including this shop, seemed to be cleaner and neater compared to Voltana.
Looking at the wooden table we were directed to, it was well cleaned.
The major difference was the customers.
Many of the people sitting at the other tables seemed to be dressed like merchants.
Now, sitting on the chair, I finally taking a breath.
Deciding on the order, I let the two people choose something and I decided to tell the waiter.
Fatina has been to some shop with me a few times, so there shouldn't be any problem. Except for liquor, though.
But Mel has probably never eaten anything in such a common shop before. That's why I was worried--
"This, no, this is... that is..."
As expected, she looked serious, furrowing her brows as she stared at the menu, seeming troubled.
"Phew, finally settled down, huh? For now, it seems like there are no pursuers."
When we finished ordering, Fatina said that while perking up her drooping ears.
Lately, I've been able to understand her state of mind from the movement of her ears. When we were on the street, she was always down.
"I didn't expect Iria to struggle this much. I was honestly surprised too."
"Likewise, thanks to Mel-san's magic, I was saved. You can use water magic, huh?"
"Yes. Just to make sure, my Level Cap is 60, and my skills are [Water Attribute Magic] and [Healing Magic (Holy Magic)]. Seeing Fatina-san overwhelming the soldiers, you seem very strong too."
It seems that Mel's abilities are quite high. In an emergency, she will be able to protect herself.
"My level hasn't risen that much yet, but my skills are [Sword Saint], [Magic Resistance], [Growth Enhancement], and [Healing Magic]. If something happens, I can also heal Mel-san. Please tell me I will!"
"It's amazing that you're not only has the famous [Sword Saint] skill, but also has four skills in total...I want you to join the Royal Knights. But I was also surprised by Ark-san's strength. You used your sword to dispel the arrows that Iria shot...and what attribute did the magic you shot at that dragon have?
"That's [Instant Death Magic]. That's the only skill I have."
When I answered that, Mel let out a surprised voice, "What!?"
"Is that the [Instant Death Magic] over there? I've never seen it have such an effect on a dragon with magic defense..."
"I don't really understand it either, but it seems to be something like that."
"I-I see..."
Mel is looking at me with a curious expression.
The [Instant Death Magic] is said to be a useless magic with a very low chance of success, so it's not surprising that she reacted that way.
"By the way, it seems like the Cretia soldiers haven't come to this city. Does Mel know something?"
"Maybe... but I've heard rumors that Trasverum is now more like a city that can govern itself. It's within our country's territory, but it has economic power and influence."
So, even if they're the Cretia Kingdom Knights, there's a possibility that they can't just attack without thinking.
"If that's the case, does it mean that soldiers won't suddenly invade this city?"
"Most likely. There are several big merchant guilds in this city, so I don't think they will just stay quiet."
If that's the case, we might be able to avoid dealing with Iria for the time being.
While it's not our intention to be at odds with the Kingdom Knights, we'd prefer to avoid a fight if possible.
(However, it seems like she firmly believes that Mel is been brainwashed, so persuading her will be difficult...)
Iria is probably being influenced by someone or something. The question is whether we can make her understand that.
"But if she's that strong, can't you guys conquer the dungeon without relying on adventurers?"
Fatina makes a valid point. It's something that has been on my mind as well.
Being able to control a dragon and further enhance its abilities with one's own, that alone greatly exceeds the abilities of an S-Rank adventurer.
This was something I learned from teaming up with Ryuin at the Emerald Green Dungeon, the strength of S-Rank adventurers lies in their high level cap and the ability to coordinate their various roles effectively.
But if she could raise her stats like a monster, then she wouldn't need to do that.
If Iria, who is a knight, is that strong by herself, maybe there are even stronger people in Cretia's knight group.
"The kingdom's knights are the last defense for our country. If we get hurt while conquering the dungeon, we won't be able to handle the monsters in different places and become vulnerable. That's why they don't send out the knights."
So they let the S-Rank adventurers do the exploring, and they try to get the key without getting hurt.
"Here you go! Your order is ready!"
Soon, the waiter brought the food.
There were different dishes on the table in front of us, and they all smelled really good.
"They look so delicious... What about you, Ark-sama?"
Seeing the huge, bright red crab on the plate that was too big to fit in both hands, Fatina's eyes lit up.
"Please don't worry about me, go ahead and eat."
"O-oh, okay..."
Fatina nervously reaches for the crab.
Next to her, Mel looks at the pasta made with lots of seafood like fish and shellfish from around here.
"S-so, what are we going to do next?"
While Fatina starts eating, Mel suddenly asks as if he's back to normal.
"Since both of you must be tired, how about resting at the inn after we finish eating today? I'm thinking of going to the adventurers' guild tomorrow. I want to know about the information on the northern dungeon."
"Oh, okay... I understand."
Mel nods awkwardly, then says "thank you" quietly, and twirls the pasta with a fork to eat. And then, a really happy expression appeared on her face.
